Using MCP Server
WriteRoom's MCP server lets AI assistants like Claude read and edit your documents. It's part of the writeroom command line tool, and WriteRoom needs to be open for it to work.
TIP
Agents that can run shell commands, like Claude Code, don't need MCP. Just tell them to use the writeroom command, or to edit your files directly. An open document updates when its file changes, and Edit > Undo takes the change back.
Starting the Server
Your assistant starts the server itself. The command is:
sh
writeroom mcpTo connect an AI assistant
Point your client at writeroom mcp. In a JSON configuration file:
json
{
"mcpServers": {
"writeroom": {
"command": "/usr/local/bin/writeroom",
"args": ["mcp"]
}
}
}For Claude Code:
sh
claude mcp add-json --scope user writeroom '{"command":"/usr/local/bin/writeroom","args":["mcp"]}'Then restart your assistant.
WARNING
The assistant can change your real documents. Experiment in a new document first.
What the Server Can Do
An assistant can:
- Read documents: list open documents, and read a document's text and selection.
- Edit documents: change the text, the selection, or the selected text.
- Manage documents: create, open, save, and close documents.
