This page lists important WriteRoom specific keyboard shortcuts. Others can be found when browsing WriteRoom's menus. WriteRoom also supports many standard macOS shortcuts.

WriteRoom ​

  • Mute Sounds: Control-Command-A

File ​

  • New: Command-N
  • New (other format): Option-Command-N
  • Document Info: Shift-Command-I

Edit ​

  • Expand Selection: Control-Shift-Command-Right
  • Contract Selection: Control-Shift-Command-Left
  • Collapse: Command-9
  • Expand: Command-0
  • Collapse All: Control-Command-9

Not in the Menus ​

These work in the editor but aren't listed on any menu item.

Typing ​

  • New line, without continuing a list or quote: Option-Return
  • Tab character, without indenting: Option-Tab
  • Indent or outdent a list item: Tab or Shift-Tab
  • Remove a list marker or quote mark: Delete at the start of the item
  • Undo an autocorrection: Delete right after it
  • Complete a word: Option-Escape, then Return or Tab to accept

Tables ​

  • Next or previous cell: Tab or Shift-Tab
  • New row below: Return
  • New row above: Shift-Return

Windows and Panels ​

  • Move between split panes: Control-Tab
  • Cycle through all windows: Command-`
  • Leave Heading Overview Mode: Escape
  • Close the find bar: Escape
  • Replace and close the spelling panel: Option-Return

Mouse ​

  • Go to a reference, footnote, or heading link: Command-click it
  • Fold a section and everything inside it: Option-click its fold chevron
