Privacy Policy

I’m Jesse Grosjean, and Hog Bay Software is me. This page lists the personal information I collect and what I do with it. The short version: very little, no ads, no tracking, and I never sell your information or share it for marketing.

Your documents

Your documents stay on your Mac, or wherever you choose to keep them, such as iCloud Drive. My apps never send your writing to me.

App Store versions

Apps bought or downloaded from the Mac App Store collect no data.

• Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple. I see Apple’s sales reports, not who you are.
• If you’ve chosen to share crash data with app developers in macOS’s Analytics & Improvements settings, Apple sends me anonymous crash reports.

Direct download versions

Versions downloaded from this website talk to my servers in a few ways:

• Update checks. The app checks this website for new versions. That request is logged like any other website visit.
• Licensing (WriteRoom). Starting a trial or activating a license sends the license key and an identifier for your Mac to my license server. The identifier is a one-way hash of your Mac’s hardware ID, different for each app. The server also stores your Mac’s name, so you can see which Macs use your license and stay within its Mac limit.
• Anonymous daily usage count (WriteRoom). Once a day the app reports the product name and how many days since its last report. Nothing identifies you or your Mac. Turn it off in Settings ▸ General.
• Crash reports. After a crash the app asks whether to email me the report. You see the email before it’s sent, and it comes from your email address. Turn the prompt off in Settings.

Purchases on this website

Website purchases are handled by Paddle, which collects your payment details. Paddle shares your name, email address and country with me so I can send your license and help with your order.

Support, forum and newsletter

• If you email me, I keep your name, email address and message to help you.
• Posts on the support forum are public and used only for the forum.
• If you sign up for the newsletter, I use your email address only to send it. Every issue has an unsubscribe link.

This website

The web server keeps standard logs (pages visited, browser, IP address) that I use to understand visits. There’s no advertising or third-party tracking.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of any personal information I hold about you, and ask me to correct or delete it. Email jesse@hogbaysoftware.com.
